HOUSEHOLD JOBS

Recently we have started having the students participate in work tasks around the classroom. This helps to teach them daily living skills that they can use for the rest of their lives. Ideally your student can learn a task, or some of the steps of a task, so they can help contribute to your household for the rest of their lives. I have attached the visuals we use along with these tasks in the classroom. Some of the jobs only pertain to school, but most can be used in everyday life.

LAUNDRY

Your student can help with laundry in many ways. You could have them help load the clothes into the washer and dryer. This can also promote range of motion because they often have to reach out to do so. At school, we have the student help us fold items as much as they are able to with assistance as needed.

CLEAN TABLE

We have the student's clean up the table when they are finished eating or after a lesson that makes the table dirty. We will have the students help us use a washcloth to clean their area. This also promotes range of motion with reaching, as well as grasping skills.

SWEEP

After meal times we have the students help us to sweep the floor. This promotes range of motion, grasping skills, and attending skills.

SPRAY AND PUT AWAY ITEMS

At school we use a spray to clean toys, you could have your student use wipes or a washcloth to clean their toys. We also have the student help us put the toy back where it belongs. This promotes grasping, attending, and manipulating objects.

TEACHER AIDE

This student typically helps me to get out items I may need for a lesson or activity. At home you could have your student help you get out ingredients for a meal, or supplies for a craft. This helps the individual to become an active participant in their environment.

ERRAND RUNNER

This person typically goes with me to the office or workroom to assist with errands. This one is a little more difficult at home but could be considered going out with you to get the mail or walk the dog. This also helps your student become an active participant in their environment.

Household Jobs: List

This link provides a checklist of daily living skills our students could work on. Some of the tasks are higher skills our students may not be able to complete but it is a nice guideline to reference.
